Grounding, or “earthing,” refers to the discovery that our bodily contact with the Earth’s natural electric charge generates general wellbeing. It reduces inflammation and pain, improves blood flow, energy and sleep (and thereby speeding up wound healing), stabilizes our heart rate, calms our nervous system, and increases our white blood cell count.
In recent times, rubber-soled shoes have separated us from contact with the electricity of the earth, an energy source essential for optimal health. When humans walked barefoot, they absorbed the free electrons which are continually bouncing off of it. Scientists have discovered that disconnecting ourselves from this source of energy (via shoes, buildings, asphalt, tires, etc.) has been wreaking havoc on our health. Recent research explains why we should be “grounding” ourselves from time to time by sitting, lying or walking barefoot on the soil.
There has been a recent increase in research on grounding.
The 2015 study The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation, the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases used photographic images of wound healing along with infrared medical imaging to show incredible reductions in inflammation as a result of earthing.
“Our main hypothesis is that connecting the body to the Earth enables free electrons from the Earth’s surface to spread over and into the body, where they can have antioxidant effects. Specifically, we suggest that mobile electrons create an antioxidant microenvironment around the injury repair field, slowing or preventing reactive oxygen species delivered by the oxidative burst from causing ‘collateral damage’ to healthy tissue, and preventing or reducing the formation of the so-called ‘inflammatory barricade’.”
“Grounding appears to improve sleep, normalize the day–night cortisol rhythm, reduce pain, reduce stress, shift the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation, increase heart rate variability, speed wound healing, and reduce blood viscosity.”
Reduction in inflammation with grounding (earthing) documented with medical infrared imaging.
Their conclusion? “The living matrix (or ground regulation or tissue tensegrity-matrix system), the very fabric of the body, appears to serve as one of our primary antioxidant defense systems. As this report explains, it is a system requiring occasional recharging by conductive contact with the Earth’s surface–the ‘battery’ for all planetary life–to be optimally effective.”
Benefits of Grounding
Reduction of inflammation. Grounding may reduce inflammation by neutralizing free radicals and promoting a balanced immune response.
Improved sleep. Grounding may enhance sleep quality by regulating circadian rhythms and lowering cortisol levels.
Stress reduction. Grounding may help alleviate stress by balancing the autonomic nervous system.
Improved blood flow. Grounding may improve blood circulation and benefit cardiovascular health.
Pain relief. Grounding may have analgesic effects, reducing pain and aiding in recovery from injuries.
Immune system support. Grounding may enhance the immune system by reducing inflammation and supporting overall health.
Normalization of cortisol levels. Grounding may help regulate cortisol levels, contributing to stress reduction and hormonal balance.
Grounding Mats — Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to plug in a grounding mat? Grounding mats plug into the ground port (the round hole) of a grounded outlet. They do not use electricity–they are simply grounded when plugged into grounded outlets. There are no “on” or “off” buttons. A grounding rod can be used if you do not have a grounded outlet.
Does it matter which side of a grounding mat I use? Usually only one side of a mat is conductive–look for the side with a logo.
Do I need to use a grounding mat for a certain amount of time? It is recommended to ground at least 30 minutes daily, but grounding mats can be used for any length of time–there is no limit to the amount of time spent grounding.
Will I feel anything when I use a grounding mat? Some experience a slight tingling sensation, while others do not. This is normal and does not mean that a mat is not working if you do not feel any sensation. Using the mat is like standing outside in grass with bare feet–you may or may not feel any sensation while doing either. The process of grounding involves the transfer of electrons from the earth to the body without a noticeable electrical current.
Are grounding mats safe for pets? Pets are often attracted to grounding mats, and they are safe for them to use.
Can I wear socks when using a grounding mat? Grounding mats work best when skin is in direct contact with them. However, feet naturally sweat and will slightly dampen socks, which will facilitate some conductivity and allow for a mat to work. Direct skin contact is ideal.
How do I clean a grounding mat? Simply wipe mats down as needed with a warm, damp washcloth. No harsh chemicals or cleaning agents should be used.
Can I sleep with a grounding mat? There is no limit to the amount of time spent grounding. Direct skin contact is a must when using grounding mats. Grounding sheets and pillow cases may be more convenient.
Can I leave a grounding mat plugged in when not in use? This is not an issue, as grounding mats do not use any electricity or draw any power.
Can I plug a grounding mat into a power strip? Mats can be plugged into power strips, extension cords, or surge protectors, as long as those items are plugged into grounded outlets.
